This Is Your Year Reinvent Your Career This Is Your Year Reinvent Your Career Have you ever thought that you might have picked the wrong career path? If so, youre not alone. Ask a friend how theyended up in their career. Theres a good chance they just happened to fall into it through a college internship or some network connections. You may have started your own career out in a similar way. But then you were on the path, you learned mora, you got promoted, and you never looked back until now. Many people start to question their career paths because of life events. Perhaps you are getting a little older and would like to do something more meaningful with your time. Perhaps you need something that pays better because youre starting a family.Or maybe you just dont like your job, plain and simple.Whatever the reason behind it, the idea of a career reinvention can be daunting. Many say its virtually impossible to pull off or that career-changers have to start over from the very bottom of the corporate ladder. It is sometimes true that a career shift leads to a pay cut, but thats not a guarantee and neither is starting over from the bottom.Take the Reins You Control Your CareerThe first key to reinventing your career is to take the reins yourself. What makes you great at your current job? Could you take those skills and qualities with you to another career? For example, if youre a good public speaker or know how to organize groups of people, these skills can help in all sorts of roles. Also think about the skills you have that may not be spelled out on your resume. For example, you may work at a nonprofit, but on the side, youve been investing in real estate. Make a list of the knowledge you have thats not outlined on your resume. Find ways to incorporate this information into your existing resume. Yo u might add a section for volunteering, consulting, skills, or leadership.Make a list of what youd like to learn to do in the future, and then figure out how to get there. Do you wish you knew more about computers? If so, look for classes you can take. Look for a nonprofit or small company where you might volunteer your services to learn on the job. Dont wait for your future boss to see something in you. Find it yourself and look for ways to nurture this new skill.A version of this article originally appeared in theMemphis Daily News.Angela Copeland is a career coach and CEO at her firm,Copeland Coaching.

The 3 Worst Types of Nosy Colleagues (and How to Deal)

The 3 Worst Types of Nosy Colleagues (and How to Deal) The 3 Worst Types of Nosy Colleagues (and How to Deal) Over the span of my career, I’ve worked in just about every kind of environment you can imagine. But from the small startup that used moving boxes for tables to a giant global institution with hundreds of thousands of employees, there’s one thing they all had in common: the nosy colleague. So, it’s probably a safe bet you’ll run into this challenging species in your career, too- if you haven’t already. Fortunately, most of the time, a nosy colleague isn’t anything more than an annoyance. But every once in a while, you’ll come across an overly curious co-worker who crosses a line. And, if you don't handle the situation carefully, it  could cause issues for your career. Here are three classic nosy colleagues, plus how to deal if you’re ever confronted with one.1.  The Talker-Turned-TakerMost of the time, Chatty Cathys are pretty harmless and a normal part of your office culture. From chatting by the water cooler about your weekend plans to pondering what your co-workers a re cooking up for the next big team meeting, friendly conversation is a great way to get to know your colleagues on a more personal level and share a bit about yourself, too.But occasionally, there's someone who uses that break room chatter to his or her own advantage. Here’s one example from early on in my career: When I was new in the office and trying to get to know everyone, one woman really seemed to be going out of her way to give me the “real story” on how the place worked, including the latest in office politics and gossip. Along the way, she asked me to fill her in on my own projects, and I didn’t see the harm in confiding in her.Until, that is, several months later. I’d started a major project and was set to present my findings to my boss, when I learned that she’d taken it upon herself to “help” me with my presentation. She volunteered to check in with my boss to help make sure I was on the right track (which I had OK’d)- but instead, she had swooped in and taken all the credit for my hard work. How to DealLet’s face it: Information is power, and power-hungry chatty colleagues will use whatever information you share to get an edge. So, when a curious colleague has burned you- whether it’s stealing your ideas or revealing your secret crush on Bob in accounting to the entire third floor- you can block that power play by keeping your conversations to quick, friendly chats. After this experience, I made it a point to keep my office conversations to a minimum with this woman. I also always had an alibi just in case I was ever cornered: I carried around a notebook or had an “important email” to get out in mind so that I could politely excuse myself from the conversation when necessary.2.  The Lingerer-Turned-LurkerIn my last job, I would be completely engrossed in a spreadsheet- or worse, writing an email- and I’d notice the office know-it-all slowly walking by my desk.At first, I didn’t think anything of it (other than, Seriou sly, doesn't this guy have work to do?). But one day, while writing a particularly sensitive email to a client, I was overwhelmed with this creepy feeling someone was watching me. I turned around, and my colleague stood right behind me, reading my email as I wrote it! Worse, he actually began to make suggestions about what I should say.Unfortunately, this wasn’t an isolated incident: I’ve had a lurker at every office I’ve worked at. And while no, you shouldn’t have anything that you wouldn’t want your boss to read on your screen, anyone who invades your privacy (and offers unwelcome advice) is incredibly frustrating. How to DealIf someone is going out his way to put his nose in your business, call the snooping out. After that incident, I made a point to stop what I was doing every time this guy came by to turn around, face him, and politely ask how I could help him. A few times, when I caught him reading over my shoulder, I jokingly told him that if that email was meant for him to read, I promised to send him a copy. And it did the trick: After a few confrontations like that, his lurking subsided.3.  The Fan-Turned-FollowerHaving co-workers who appreciate your work is pretty awesome. While it’s great to be appreciated by your boss, having the respect of your peers is a huge win- which makes this type of nosy colleague especially hard to spot.Early on in my career, I’d made some suggestions to my team’s procedures that ended up being widely adopted throughout the company. One of my colleagues, who was a few years younger, was particularly impressed, and asked me to share all my “secrets” with her so she could step up her game as well. At first, I was flattered- who wouldn’t be?But, before long, that flattery bordered on stalking. She began shadowing me on every project possible and even tried to mimic my writing style. While most of the time imitation is a sincere form of flattery, in a competitive work environment where everyone is trying to set themselves apart from the pack, having a carbon copy of yourself isn’t exactly ideal. How to DealHave an office stalker? Turn the tables on her. In my case, instead of giving my colleague the opportunity to follow in my footsteps, I asked her if I could follow in hers. I spent less time detailing my methods and more asking her how she’d approach an issue. When she asked me how I was handling a sensitive situation with a client, I’d reply by telling her I was stuck. Then, I'd ask her advice on crafting an email or how to prepare for a difficult phone conversation. And you know what? It’s a good thing I did. She turned out to be pretty fantastic at the job, and we eventually learned to collaborate productively and developed our own unique working styles as a result. While curiosity may spell doom for the cat, it doesn’t have to do the same for your career. Keep your wits about you, and use these tips to maintain a healthy level of respect between you and your nosy collea gues.Photo of people working courtesy of Shutterstock.

Maybe you’ve already read about how to address a cover letter or learned the best length of a cover letter, but do those same strategies apply to internships? The short answer is yes. It’s important to structure your cover letter as if you are applying for any position in the “real world.”However, when applying for an internship, you probably lack real-life experiences outside of the classroom. That’s why you should showcase the skills you’ve learned in class or through extracurricular activities that make you a great candidate for this internship. It’s important to customize each cover letter for the internship that you are applying for.How to Structure Your Cover Letter for an InternshipThe structure of your cover letter for an internship should be like the structure of a regular cover letter. Without relevant real work experiences to include, you’ll want to include experiences from school, focusing on your classes and extracurricular activities. Think about what you have recently learned that you could apply to this internship, or how an organization you are involved with taught you leadership or time management skills. These are things you will want to include in your cover letter. In the opening paragraph, you should describe how you heard about the internship or what you know about the company and demonstrate your interest in the internship. Include relevant information about yourself including your major, education level, and interests that apply to this internship. If you found something interesting about the company during your research, such as an upcoming project tha t you would like to be a part of, include that as it shows your interest and passion for the company. In the next few paragraphs, you’ll want to review the internship description and highlight a few qualities that make you a great fit for the internship. You can draw from any area of your life. If you have volunteer experience that taught you customer service or played sports that taught discipline and leadership, include that in your cover letter if it is relevant to the internship. Don’t forget to show how your skills can benefit the company, not the other way around. It can be tricky when writing a cover letter for an internship because you’re looking for so much from the company in order to learn and gain experience. But you want to make sure to keep the company’s needs at the forefront of your cover letter. This will set you apart and make you a more desirable choice for the internship. In the closing paragraph, don’t forget to reiterate your interest in the company alo ng with your passion for the industry and your contact information. Your final sentence should leave the hiring manager feeling like your experiences have prepared you for this opportunity, so make sure to end strong.Cover Letter Sample for an InternshipSee the cover letter below for an example of skills that can be highlighted in an internship cover letter. While it can be intimidating to write a cover letter for an internship, with these tips and guidelines you will be prepared to land an internship in no time.

Your overactive imagination may not be as good for you as you think

Your overactive imagination may not be as good for you as you think Your overactive imagination may not be as good for you as you think Naturalist John Muir once said, “The power of imagination makes us infinite.” But new research begs to differ. Two researchers from British universities conducted laboratory-based and online studies to test whether imagination does actually have a connection to learning and creativity. What they found may surprise you.Conventional wisdom and a slew of quotes from Albert Einstein imply that imagination is a requisite for intellect and those with overactive imaginations are more likely to be brilliant innovators. But recent scientific work suggests that what we’ve assumed for centuries may not actually be true.“We found that imagination is only weakly associated with learning achievement and creativity,” the study’s authors wrote in the British Journal of Psychology.Imagination is, however, associated with another trait. According to the research, imagination - or “creating mental representations of concepts, ideas, and sensations that are not contemporaneously perceived by the senses” - comprises “22.5% of the variance in schizotypal beliefs.”And what are those, you may ask?A schizotypal personality disorder is a diagnosis among people who demonstrate “odd or eccentric” behavior and rarely have friends, according to Mayo Clinic. Those with schizotypal personality disorder tend to harbor “peculiar” thinking and often times believe that powers such as telepathy exist, the clinic explains. The study’s authors concluded that their research indicates “imagination may be more indicative of cognitive eccentricities rather than benefit the accumulation of knowledge or production of novel and useful ideas.” So perhaps it’s time to stop romanticizing living in a world of your imagination - that may not mean what you think it means.

The secret to career success in the technology revolution

The secret to career success in the technology revolution The secret to career success in the technology revolution With technology transforming work faster than any time in human history, we are frequently asked how to plan a successful career. The accelerating rate of technological change has already transformed industries from manufacturing to movies. How long will it be before artificial intelligence does your thinking better than you can or self-serve gives customers a level of personalized experience you could never replicate even on your best day?According to extensive research conducted by Price Waterhouse, 93% of the CEOs surveyed say technology will significantly or completely transform their industry. What does that mean for you?How do you make yourself invaluable in a world like that?We frequently hear from senior leaders that they struggle to find people with the ability to innovate in their day-to-day work. As technology advances, if you want to stand out, get noticed, and be an invaluable member of the team, become a micro-innovator in your own domain.77% of the CEOs say they struggle to find the creativity and innovation they need. Here are 3 ways to stand out as a micro-innovator:1. Practice 360-degree empathyComputers may be able to “think” but we’ve never met one who can feel. Here’s your edge. Empathy can’t be outsourced to computers. Pay close attention to the frustration points around you, up, down and sideways. What’s ticking off or delighting your customers? What frustrates or energizes your team? What’s freaking out or motivating your boss? Why are your peers so demoralized?Once you’ve identified the pain points or motivators, look for little ways to make life better for your customers, your colleagues, or your boss. What process can you improve? What problem can you solve?2. Ask how can we?Once you’ve identified your solutions sweet spot, reframe the issue by asking “how can we” questions. “How can we?” is a fantastic problem-solving question that will make you stand out from the crowd. We know you’re familiar with some of the big innovations that have come from “how can we” questions. Imagine the conversation that led to these two game-changing companies.“How can we build a transportation company with no fleet” â€" Uber“How can we offer lodging with no real estate” AirbnbIt can work for your team too.“How can we stay true to the reason behind this policy, while reducing customer frustration?”“How can we keep employees challenged and engaged in this flat organization where promotions are limited?“How can we develop our team with limited resources?3. Speak to be heard: The V.O.I.C.E. approachYou’ve identified the pain points, and come up with some potential solutions. Now it’s time to position your ideas. We often see employees with great ideas get overlooked because they’re not presenting them well. You want to speak so you can be heard. The VOICE model will help you present your ideas in a way that builds your credibility and makes it more likely that the best ideas are adopted .V â€" VisualizeVisualize what you are going to say and how you’re going to say it. Who are you looking to influence with your idea? What do you want this person to think, feel or do, as result of your presentation?O â€" OrganizeOrganize your thoughts in advance. Identify the top three points you must make no matter what. Identifying your top three messages will keep you focused and help you avoid that horrible feeling as you walk out the door, “ah, shoot, I forgot to tell them….” Choose an opening line that makes everyone put down their phone and pay attention. Eg “In the next three months we have an opportunity to improve margins by 10%.”I â€" InquireNow think about your stakeholders and do your homework Who cares most about this subject and why? Who’s most likely to be skeptical and why? Learn as much as you can about any potential naysayers.C â€" ConsiderListen carefully to the opinions and ideas of others. Thank them and respond appropriately, building on and inte grating their ideas if possible. If you know the objections, it can be helpful if you’re the one who brings them up first. “Now you may be thinking ______ (insert objection here) and then address it.E â€" EnergizeStay energetic in your delivery. It’s hard to ignore someone is genuinely passionate about their point of view, but be sure to keep your emotions balanced. Bring an energetic confidence to your position, while building a story that will excite others to join you.The automation revolution is just getting started, but you don’t need to become a machine to compete. Your best competitive advantage is your humanity. Your ability to empathize, creatively problem solve, and positively influence your customers, colleagues, and supervisors gives you the edge you need to thrive as the world changes.Karin Hurt and David Dye help leaders achieve breakthrough results without losing their soul. Contract for Deed FAQ - United States

Contract for Deed FAQ - United States Contract for Deed FAQ - United States DefinitionsWhat is a Contract for Deed?A contract for the purchase of real property (real estate) in which the seller retains the deed (title) to the property until the buyer makes payments in installments equal to the agreed upon purchase price. The purchaser has an immediate right to possession of the property, but the vendor defers delivery of the deed (transfer of title) until they have secured all or part of the purchase price. A Contract for Deed is useful when a buyer is unable to obtain financing other than seller financing. What does the term Deed mean? The term Deed refers to a legal document that transfers title of real property (land and buildings or easements) from one individual to another. What is the Governing Law?The Governing Law will be the jurisdiction in which the property is located. It may or may not coincide with the jurisdiction in which the parties reside. What does the term real property mean? The term real property refers to land and things attached to land, such as buildings, fences and trees. What is an acceleration clause? An acceleration clause is a term in a loan agreement that allows the lender to make the unpaid balance due immediately if the purchaser violates a term of the loan agreement, such as failing to make a loan payment. What is the municipal address? The Municipal Address is the physical address of the property and it is the same as the mailing address. (e.g. Street, City, State, ZIP Code, Country) What does the term legal description mean? The term legal land description refers to the format used in your jurisdiction to officially describe sections of land for the purpose of government records. The legal land description is how government records define the land that you have title to. In North America, most jurisdictions use a township and ranges system. Your legal land description may be found on your land title, in tax assessment information, and in your mortgage agreement. It is NOT your street address. What are the statutory disclosure requirements?Statutory disclosure requirements vary from state to state, but generally the Seller is required to disclose any known defects in the physical condition of the property that may materially affect its value, including, but not limited to, items such as malfunctioning appliances, pest control problems, mold problems, structural issues with the home, roof defects, etc. We recommend that you make yourself aware of the statutory disclosure requirements for your state, and if you are not sure what the requirements are, contact your local real estate commission, and or a local attorney. What are additional clauses? While the Contract for Deed Law Depot.com provides is very comprehensive and provides sound protection, this option is available to allow you to tailor the contract to your specific circumstances. How do I write the additional clauses? Please see Drafting Tips under the Help menu. If you are still unsure of how to properly word any of your additional clauses, it is recommended that you consult a local attorney or lawyer for assistance in writing your additional clauses. SigningI do not know when the Contract for Deed will be signed. Can I fill in the date later?Yes, by selecting 'Unsure' as the date the agreement will be signed, a blank line will be inserted into the lease so that you can add the correct date after printing the document. Why is a Notary Acknowledgement necessary?A Notary Acknowledgement is often required by local legislation to authenticate deeds. In addition to various other duties, a Notary Public certifies certain legal documents. Swearing or signing in front of a Notary Public is better evidence that the document or contract was signed by that person (reduces the risk of fraud), and helps avoid bureacratic hold-ups.

4 Long-Tail Keyword Tools You Need to Know About

4 Long-Tail Keyword Tools You Need to Know About 4 Long-Tail Keyword Tools You Need to Know About In June 2013, Chitika found that the No. 1 search result in Google’s search rankings earned 33 percent of search traffic, while the search result that ranked tenth earned less than 3  percent. One way you can improve your Google rank is by focusing on long-tail keywords. Long-tail keywords are niche search phrases, usually three or more words long, that offer low competition, low search volume, and high searcher intent. According to Moz, 70 percent of searches use  long-tail keywords. Here are four tools that can help you hone in on top-performing long-tail keywords for all aspects of your business, ranging from product pages to job descriptions: 1. Google Keyword Planner Google Keyword Planner gives you a better understanding of how your keywords are performing in Google’s search results. A Google AdWords account is required; however, you do not need to be advertising to use this tool. When creating your AdWords account, you are asked to provide your website and where you would like your content to target. You can choose to focus on local towns, entire states, or multiple countries. Next, you are asked to enter the product or service you are looking to provide. For instance, if you provide employee engagement software, that would be your initial keyword. Google then provides a list of additional keywords that are similar to yours to help you target people looking for your software under a different name. Additionally, you are asked to create an advertisement and state how much you’re willing to spend on your ad. However, you do not actually need to proceed with placing an ad on Google; this just allows you to use the Keyword Planner. After you’ve entered in your information, you’re able to view a variety of keywords and determine how competitive each word is. The more specific you make your keywords, the easier it will be to rank higher in Google. Google’s Keyword Planner is an easy, free way to understand if your keywords are too competitive when you’re starting out. 2. Wordtracker Wordtracker allows you to enter your keyword and then provides data on how well that word is doing and what other keywords are out-performing your original word. It can help marketers who are struggling to understand how their target market is using the Internet before making a purchase. When you enter employee engagement software into Wordtracker, 10 keywords are displayed, along with the amount of traffic associated with each one. Employee engagement software gets 709 visits, while the benefits of employee engagement software gets 119 visits. While the traffic number went down significantly, it helps provide a specific long-tail keyword that you can use to create content that pushes you toward  the top of Google’s search results. 3. Googles Autocomplete Capability The best way to find effective long-tail keywords is to act like you’re a consumer looking for your product. Searches tend to start with vague phrasing, which results in an overwhelming list of results. To help narrow down your search results, you type in more specific search requirements. Being the helpful search engine that it is, whenever someone types something into the search bar, Google  tries to autocomplete what it  believes the searcher is looking for. You can therefore  use Google’s autocomplete capability  to understand what your customers are searching for. When you type employee engagement software into Google’s search bar, the list of autocomplete suggestions includes: employee engagement best practices, employee engagement software benefits, employee engagement surveys, and employee engagement activities, to name a few. Using whichever one of these long-tail keywords that relates most closely with your employee engagement software is an ideal way to target your specific audience, instead of being vague. 4. Ubersuggest Ubersuggest is a useful tool that allows you to enter a keyword and find additional long-tail keyword phrases. After entering employee engagement software into Ubersuggest, you can find a plethora of additional suggestions that go beyond what Google’s autocomplete tool provides you. Ubbersuggest  first lists what the keyword is, along with typical long-tail phrases. It then lists additional long-tail phrases for each letter of the alphabet. From there, you can click on each suggested keyword to find even more long-tail phrases. It’s essentially the long-tail finder that never stops thinking. If  you’re just  starting out, effectively ranking in Google search results  can only  happen if  you focus on long-tail keywords. What are some tools that you’ve used to find long-tail keywords?

These are the hottest jobs in U.S. in 2018

These are the hottest jobs in U.S. in 2018 These are the hottest jobs in U.S. in 2018 Technology stocks are taking a beating right now, especially the biggest companies in the market, but, despite the current news cycle, economists predict that the technology sector will continue to produce substantial growth over the long haul. Most importantly, this segment of the economy will continue to provide solid, high paying jobs.We gathered the data from Indeed, which analyzed two factors to determine what counts as a good job. First, the base salary must be at least $75,000, well above the national average of around $47,000. Second, the jobs must be in a high-growth sector with lots of opportunities to enter the field (e.g., astronauts and professional sports players aren’t eligible).Indeed analyzed their own numbers to see how those high-paying positions had expanded on their own site since 2014. We used this information to create a hierarchy by salary range: The highest earners are on top and the lowest  on the bottom. We then color-coded each figure to represent the hi storical rate of growth over the past three years. We also correlated the size of the figure with the base salary, creating an easy to understand graph of the best jobs in the U.S. today. Here are the Top 10 “best” jobs ranked in order of base salary, together with the position’s historical job growth: Machine learning engineer: $136,241 with 166% growth Data scientist: $132,915 with 106% growth Optometrist: $131,692 with 118% growth Computer vision engineer: $131,297 with 169% growth Development operations engineer: $125,714 with 91% growth Agile coach: $120,142 with 80% growth Chief estimator: $116,848 with 101% growth Full stack developer: $111,640 with 198% growth Head of sales: $108,788 with 42% growth Staff pharmacist: $107,584 with 42% growth From a visual perspective, one thing immediately stands out. The top half of the pyramid contains the most purple figures when compared to the bottom, which is mostly green. In other words, most of the highest-paying jobs have also been the fastest growing. This makes a certain amount of sense since employers seeking highly skilled workers are forced to pay a premium for their labor, especially if the number of openings exceeds the numbers of qualified applicants. In other words, workers in those industries and positions clearly have the upper hand.It is also worth noting how many of the highest-paying jobs are in the technology sector. Machine learning engineers ($136,241), data scientists ($132,915), computer vision engineers ($131,297), and full stack developers ($111,640) all work on cutting edge technology. When you see a field with 6-figure average salaries and almost 200% job growth, that’s a clear indication of a technical skills gap.Compare that with the bottom of the pyram id, which is largely comprised of occupations from a variety of industries, including pharmacists, construction managers, and architects. These aren’t bad jobs, but they don’t require the same kind of rigorous high-tech education as many of the high pay/rapid growth jobs in the tech sector. The big takeaway from our analysis is that if you want a high paying job with lots of professional growth opportunities, you should definitely consider getting a degree in computer science with a specialty in engineering or data science. These positions are primed for substantial expansion in both wages and opportunity in the years ahead.Data: Table 1.1This article first appeared on HowMuch.net.
